How to Paint Wall Stripes

Create an attractive colour scheme for any indoor space with painted wall stripes.

Step 1: Paint the wall with a background colour. (We used Valspar Signature Lucky Street, #ar923.) Let dry.

Step 2: We created a stripe pattern that repeats every 15″ and consists of a 2″-wide white stripe (Valspar Signature Sunday Times, #ar915), a 2″-wide grey stripe (Valspar Signature Skyline Shadow, #ar1318), and a 1″-wide blue stripe (Evening Stroll, #ar1224). To create the same pattern, measure 10″ and 12″ out from one wall corner and mark where the wall meets the ceiling. For the next set of stripes, measure the repeat distance (15″) from the first pair of marks (25″ and 27″). Repeat as you work your way across the wall.

Step 3: To paint the first set of stripes, follow a level to apply strips of painter’s tape with a 2″ gap between them. (You may want to draw lines where the tape will be applied first, to make masking easier.) Apply white paint between the tape strips, and remove the tape after the paint dries.

Step 4: Now measure 2″ over from the white stripe and mask with painter’s tape. Apply grey paint; let dry and remove the tape.

Step 5: Next measure 1″ over from the grey stripe and mask with painter’s tape. Apply blue paint; let dry and remove the tape.

Good to Know: Even when paint feels dry to the touch, it may not yet have bonded firmly to the wall and the tape could pull the paint loose. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended drying times before taping over freshly painted surfaces.
