Decorative Wood-and-Dowel Menorah

Celebrate the season by making a menorah. This easy wood and dowel project will dress up a fireplace mantel, dining room table, or living room.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Make the Candles

Step 1: Tape off the flame portion of the votives and spray-paint the bases silver.

Step 2: Cut the dowel into eight 4″ [10.16 cm] pieces and one 5″ [12.7 cm] piece. Sand dowels.

Step 3: Cover dowels with gold spray paint. Let paint dry and spray the tips of the dowels with silver spray paint for an ombré effect.

Make the Wood Base

Step 1: Cut the 1″× 4″× 4′ [2.54 cm x 10.16 cm x 1.22 m] into two equal pieces, then glue and clamp or weight them together face to face.

Step 2: Cut the 1″× 6″× 4′ [2.54 cm x 15.24 cm x 1.22 m] to 27″ [68.58 cm].

Step 3: Paint the boards with the Ocean Storm base colour. Allow paint to dry overnight.

Step 4: Paint a thin coat of Tempered Gray on one side of a board and pull a graining tool across it, rocking it forward and back as you pull. Allow the paint to dry for a few minutes. If paint looks too thick or not subtle enough, hold the board under running water and remove excess paint to achieve the desired look. Repeat on exposed sides of each board. Let dry.

Step 5: Center the 1″× 6″ [2.54 cm x 15.24 cm] on top of the 1″× 4″ [2.54 cm x 10.16 cm] board and glue together. Arrange the dowels on top of the wood base, then set the votives on top of the dowels.
